Tips for Icky, Sticky, Chlorine water Summer days

Fun swimming but need help with aftermath battles due to chlorine water? If you and/or kids are fighting flaky/dry skin and hair thanks to chlorinated pools, try this tip from Ayurveda.
  • Use a good quality sesame oil to apply to the whole body and hair either a few hours before a swim or apply it at night before going to bed. remember that a little oil going a long way but it needs to be gently massaged into the skin and scalp.
  • A few minutes of time set aside with about a teaspoon of this oil for the whole body (and scalp) will give lots of relief. Make sure that if you buy the sesame oil from regular Indian or Asian stores, they do not have Jaggery as a component.
  • I've read on some Ayurveda sites that Virgin Coconut oil with a few drops of Castor oil could be used too. I have not tried it myself but do not see any harm with that. I cant rave about Castor oil enough but thats not for this post :-)
  • Note of caution to anybody with allergies to nuts - try the oil on a small area on the limbs first.

Ayurveda - back to basics

Hi guys! If you read my profile and all, you'll know how I ended up on this blog with this particular interest.

I wanted to give my kids (12 and 9) a sample of the natural way of life from back in India where a Sunday routine meant oil massages, churning a huge pot of buttermilk to enjoy/steal home-made butter, face packs with sandalwood etc etc etc (we were 3 girls at home, so u'll see a lot of references to face packs :-)). Not to forget having to do household chores (remember going to the flour-mill or picking up clothes from the tailor?).

When I was regaling my kids with all these details, they raised a smart (or so they thought) point - 'but mommy, we cant do any of those here! we dont want to oil our hair or wash our hair with soap-nuts or whatever you call them! those are from olden times!'

Olden Times? I'll show them, I thought. Not only can we make it possible here but we can make it fun and practical. My daughter is all about going green, so I wanted to use that as a winning argument. My son was getting close to teen years and was interested in acne-free, shiny (dandruff-free) hair. So that was the winning argument with him :-)

I told them - lets try the natural way for 2 months. I promised them I'd make it fun and simple. If they didnt like it after that trial period, we'd stop.

We had a deal - off we went. 2 months later they were amazed and thrilled. We've stuck to it every since and we are on our 2nd year with no complaints.

The posts you'll see in the Ayurveda page are all kid-friendly. They are not certified by any doctor, so I urge all to use your own discretion if you or your family have any allergies.
